- - - Our village is located in
the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains about 10 miles southwest of San
Jose at the entrance of a historic pass which was once a toll road. Big
Basin Way is our downtown main street. It becomes Congress Springs Road
west of town. And it is Highway 9 all the way. Many uphill miles later
as it crosses the ridge line which is Skyline Boulevard, it continues down
into the San Lorenzo Valley as Highway 9 all the way to Santa Cruz. The
entire San Lorenzo Valley was logged out in the late 1800's with the exception
of what is now known as Big Basin Park. Horse-drawn teams and wagons used
the road to haul redwood logs out to a sawmill about 2 miles west of our
village. Tolls were charged on a portion of the road until it became public
property many years later.
The cities south of San Francisco and Oakland lie in what was once a rich
fruit and vegetable growing region. Until the early 1960's there were lots
of agriculture, orchards, dairies, wineries and many food-processing industries.
The primary manufacturers in the region were Lockheed and Westinghouse
in Sunnyvale, the Ford Plant in Milpitas and the GM plant in Fremont. Industrial
production developed significantly after World War II and growth has since
been rapid. There are still manufacturers of business, electric, food-processing
machinery; household goods, aircraft and motor parts. But the manufacture
of computers, silicon chips and electronic items started taking the lead
in the late 1960's in the area now commonly known as Silicon Valley. There
are a few places within this valley where one can find the better neighborhoods,
the better schools, and as expected the most expensive homes. These are
Saratoga, Los Altos, Palo Alto, Los Gatos and the Almaden area of San Jose.
