Our city is a wonderful place to shop, dine or see a movie. There is an
18-hole golf course, an ice-skating rink, a museum which focuses on the
local environment, an art gallery, many children's sports leagues, the
Mid-Peninsula Boys and Girls Club, and a YMCA. Community organizations
include Toastmasters, Adult Education and a Mothers Club.
The city began its development in the early 1860's just after a rail line
was completed up the peninsula. Wealthly individuals chose to build summer
and weekend homes there, and some of those wealthy land owners also developed
businesses in the town.
In the 1880's the town had terrible experiences with fires. There was no
fire department. Help had to travel all the way from Redwood City. After
the first two fires, a town meeting was called, during which the building
in which the meeting was held burned down.
Very soon afterward a fire department was organized. With that and the
completion of Crystal Springs Dam, providing abundant quality drinking
water, expansion was possible. The middle class began to move to the town,
purchasing plots created from subdivided land.
The city is about a 20-minute drive from most major areas of employment,
including the East Bay and Half Moon Bay. The International Airport is
just a few minutes away. The commuter train, CalTrain, stops here and connects
points all the way to Gilroy.
Neighbohoods in the community vary greatly in character, offering opportunities
in all price ranges to purchase a home or condominium. Contact us and we
would be happy to introduce you to our fine city.
