The discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill, northeast of here, marked the beginning
of the California Gold Rush of 1849, transformed our little town from a
small settlement into a thriving city almost overnight, and gave the Golden
Gate Bridge and the 49ers their names. The city was incorporated in 1850.
After the gold rush was over, many people settled in the city to make their
fortune in other ways. Small industries, mercantile establishments and
shipping companies sprung up and prospered. A few famous individuals who
spent part of their life here were John Muir, who founded the Sierra Club,
Jack London and Mark Twain. One of its many parks is Golden Gate Park,
which stretches more than 50 blocks and is the home of the Steinhart Aquarium,
the De Young Museum and the Morrison Planetarium. Today the city is part
of the 5th largest metropolitan area in the United States. It is
located at the northern tip of the peninsula. Spectacular views of the
Pacific Ocean, the Marin Headlands, SF Bay and the East Bay hills can all
be found in this breathtaking city. Its own symphony, ballet and opera
are ranked among the finest performing arts groups in the world. Our city
offers fine dining and music in just about any style.
Each neighborhood in this diverse city has its own character and its own
beloved local establishments. Families will find some of the best public
schools in the state, as well as a broad selection of private and parochial
schools. There are plenty of activities for children, including gyms, arts
programs, science programs and, in the summer, camps of various kinds.
The city is less than a day's drive from the Napa wine country, skiing
in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, boating at Clear Lake, and beautiful Monterey
Bay with its popular beach and boardwalk with rides and amusements in the
north, as well as the aquarium on the other end of the bay. Less than an
hour from here you will find hiking at Mount Tamalpais, sun bathing at
Stinson Beach and boating on Richardson Bay.
Our city on the bay has something to suit everyone and there is always
a variety of properties available. Please contact us and we would be glad
to help you find your home here.
