Gilroy was founded in 1867 after getting its start in 1850 as a stage stop
along the Monterey Road linking San Jose and Monterey. From then until
recently, this has been an agricultural community. Now it is perhaps the
fastest growing city in Santa Clara County, a definite part of Silicon
Valley. This growth has come about because of high-tech software, support
industries, several manufacturing and production industries. Indian Motorcycle
headquarters are in Gilroy. The 100 year old legendary motorcycle was brought
back to life, now manufactured here.
Considerable recreation is available in and around Gilroy, including golf
courses and water sports in several nearby reservoirs. Cal-Train currently
makes its last stop here as a commuter connection to San Francisco and
all cities in between. The climate is often described as "Mediterranean"
with mild temperatures. The climate is hot and dry in the summer with mild
winters during the rainy season.
